Mirrors, Windows and Sliding Glass Doors refer to the way a book can reflect, show, or even put you in the shoes of someone else. Books with these aspects often help to bring certain people with diverse experiences to light and expose them to the eyes of people who may not know they even exist or of the struggles they have undergone. These books can bring great impact for the lives of the readers and even the lives of the subject whose story has come to light to be known.
There are many books across the globe that contain mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, and a portion of these books come in the form of picture book. Picture books that contain these aspects are vital to the spread of unlighted information and forgotten people, because they are accessible for children. Anyone can pick up and read a picture book, and if they cannot read they can still see and understand the story through the pictures. The ability for children to read these stories is also vital, in that it they are young, they are unbiased, and they can carry this information with them always and know about these stories and people, even though their parents may not. A great example of one of these book is, My Name is Yoon, which tells the tale of a young Korean girl who had to adapt to a new culture and life in America. Most people don't understand the struggle of re-learning your entire life by moving to a new and completely different country, this book helps to bring that struggle to light. Another book that particularly helps show the struggle of growing up without a father in America, is Knock, Knock. Knock, Knock shows how hard it is to lose a father to the prison system in America, and that struggle is known to most people who have two parents to raise them. But not all books are about completely different people from different origins and backgrounds, some of these books simply show a generic conundrum such as failure and teaches how it can be a good thing and a learning experience. Rosie Revere Engineer is a book that does just that, in the story it shows that while failure can seem humiliating and like a massive set back, it can also be a chance to learn and re-think how to go about a situation. There are many organizations out there that are trying to help push these books into society and libraries across the nation and even the world. A few key organizations doing this are We Need Diverse Books, Own Voices, and Read Woke. These organizations help to shine a light on minority writers, stories, and people. It is important to help fill our libraries and as well as our mind with truth and stories to help us understand just how life is for everyone else. Beaty, Andrea, and David Roberts. Rosie Revere, Engineer. Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2013. Bedford, David, and Bridget Marzo. Knock, Knock! Little Hare, 2005. Recorvits, Helen, and Gabi Swiatkowska. My Name Is Yoon.
